Four rules make almost every adventure better.
River Dog Outfitters wants water recreation to feel approachable without pretending that rivers, lakes and coastal water are risk-free.
Wear Your Life Jacket
Properly sized personal flotation devices are included with River Dog Outfitters rentals. Our rental policy requires participants to wear the appropriate PFD while using the equipment on the water.
Check Conditions
Look at weather, wind, water temperature, river flow or tides for the actual destination before launching.
Know Your Comfort Level
Start on calm water if you are new. There is no prize for choosing a more difficult destination than you are ready to enjoy.
Communicate
If plans change, equipment is damaged or something does not feel right, contact River Dog Outfitters rather than improvising a new return arrangement.
You do not have to start standing up.
Paddleboarding can look more difficult from shore than it feels once you are on a stable board. New paddlers can begin seated or on their knees and stand only when they feel comfortable.
River Dog Outfitters also plans to offer sit-or-stand stability boards with a supported seat option for customers who prefer a more relaxed way to enjoy the water.

Stable, versatile and active.
Paddleboards are excellent for calm rivers, lakes and lagoons when conditions match the paddler’s ability.
- Start seated or kneeling if needed.

- Follow River Dog instructions about leash use for the specific environment.

Seated and comfortable.
Recreational kayaks can be a good option for customers who prefer sitting lower on the water or want to explore for a longer period.
- Keep weight centered and evenly distributed.
- Secure loose belongings.
- Stay aware of wind and current.

Relaxing—but still moving water.
River tubes are intended only for appropriate local conditions and suitable stretches of water.
- Use only approved tubing areas and routes.
- Keep feet and body positioned to protect yourself from shallow obstacles.
- Do not tie people or tubes together unless River Dog Outfitters specifically approves the setup.

Conditions matter more than the calendar.
A location that was calm yesterday may not feel the same today. Wind, water temperature, river flow, tide and weather can all change how demanding an outing becomes.
- Check the forecast for the destination itself.
- Pay attention to wind direction and strength.
- Do not assume warm air means warm water.
- Check Trinity River conditions before local river use.
- Check tides before using tidal areas of Humboldt Bay.
- Leave the water if conditions begin exceeding your comfort or ability.
River, lake and coast are not the same.
The Adventure Guide includes several kinds of water, and each deserves a slightly different approach.
Current keeps moving.
River flow can change seasonally and affects where you can comfortably paddle, float, enter and exit.
- Identify your entry and exit before starting.
- Watch for shallow rocks and obstacles.
- Do not assume every stretch is suitable simply because another section looks calm.
Calm can change quickly.
Lakes can offer excellent beginner conditions, but increasing wind can create waves and make the return paddle considerably harder.
- Watch afternoon wind.
- Stay aware of recreational boats.
- Do not travel farther from shore than your ability comfortably allows.
Cold water and tides deserve respect.
Coastal destinations can be beautiful for paddling, but water temperatures are colder and Humboldt Bay conditions depend heavily on location and tide.
- Check wind and coastal weather.
- Check tides for tidal destinations.
- Dress for the water temperature, not just the air.
When the equipment travels with you.
To-Go rentals give you much more freedom, but they also make the renter responsible for transportation, destination selection, setup and returning the complete package.
- Secure all equipment during transportation.
- Confirm every accessory before leaving Willow Creek.
- Follow the provided setup and inflation instructions.
- Never exceed the recommended equipment pressure or load limit.
- Confirm destination access and current regulations.
- Do not carry plants, mud or standing water from one body of water to another.
- Return all pumps, paddles, bags, PFDs and accessories with the primary equipment.
- Allow enough travel time to meet the agreed return deadline.

Before you head out.
I’ve never paddleboarded before. Can I still rent one?
Yes. Beginners can start seated or kneeling and stand only when comfortable. We also plan to offer stable sit-or-stand options for renters who prefer a seated experience.
What should I rent if balance is a concern?
A recreational kayak or one of our planned sit-or-stand stability boards may be a better match than a traditional stand-up experience.
Do I have to know how to swim?
Participants should be comfortable around water and understand that falling or entering the water is possible. Properly fitted personal flotation devices are required under River Dog Outfitters rental policy.
Are life jackets included?
Yes. River Dog Outfitters provides properly sized personal flotation devices with qualifying rentals.
What should I wear?
Wear clothing appropriate for getting wet. Water shoes, sun protection and quick-drying clothing are useful during warm-weather outings. Coastal and cold-water destinations may require substantially warmer clothing.
What should I bring?
Drinking water, sunscreen, snacks, a towel, dry clothing and a secure way to protect your phone and valuables are good starting points.

Are paddleboard leashes included?
Leash use depends on the equipment and environment. River, lake and coastal conditions are different, so follow the equipment-specific instructions provided at handoff.
What if the wind gets stronger?
Wind can make a return paddle substantially more difficult. If conditions begin exceeding your comfort or ability, return toward a safe shore rather than continuing farther from your exit point.
What if the water is cold but the weather is hot?
Dress for the water conditions as well as the air temperature. Cold-water immersion can cause an immediate physical response even on a warm day.
Can I take my rental anywhere I want?
Adventure To-Go rentals provide substantial flexibility, but the destination must be appropriate for the equipment and permitted under the rental agreement. Customers are responsible for checking access, restrictions and current conditions.
Can I use a river tube at the coastal lagoons?
River tubes are intended primarily for suitable local river recreation. Paddleboards and kayaks are generally the better equipment choices for the lakes and coastal destinations featured in the Adventure Guide.
Can River Dog Outfitters cancel a rental because of conditions?
Yes. A rental may be changed, relocated, postponed or canceled when River Dog Outfitters determines that access, weather, fire activity, river conditions or another circumstance makes the planned service unsuitable.
Is a waiver required?
Yes. Adult participants must complete the required rental documents. Requirements for participating minors will follow the finalized minor policy listed above.
What happens if I damage something?
Accidental damage, excessive damage, loss and ordinary wear are handled differently. Final damage terms will be clearly explained in the rental agreement before reservations open.
What if I am running late returning a To-Go rental?
